Winnipeg to Host International Health Communications Conference
Winnipeg, Manitoba - The International Conference on Healthcare Communications,
sponsored by the Health Sciences Communications
Association (HeSCA) has chosen Winnipeg as the host city for its 2002
conference. The dates for this impressive event are June 18-22, 2002.
HeSCA has not held a meeting in Canada since 1980, when the biocommunicators
gathered in Calgary.
| Glen Murray, Mayor
of Winnipeg says "On behalf of my colleagues on Winnipeg City
Council, I would like to extend a sincere welcome to the Health
Sciences Communications Association. We are honoured this diverse
group of professionals has chosen Winnipeg as their host city.
Winnipeg is on the cutting edge of bio-research and technology
convergence, and that compliments the important agenda that will
be tackled by HeSCA members during the Winnipeg conference." |

The conference will focus on two technology tracks and how they affect
the delivery of healthcare communications: Videoconferencing/Telemedicine
and the Internet. There will also be a vast selection of workshops and
lecture sessions for communications professionals throughout the course
of this four-day event. Conference co-chairs, Bill Peters of St. Boniface
General Hospital Research Centre and Tim Spencer of the Health Sciences
Centre are excited about bringing their colleagues to Winnipeg. Bill Peters
adds, "HeSCA is comprised of some of the best biomedical media producers
in the world, and their conferences have been of the highest caliber,
hosted by cities such as Orlando, Dallas and Phoenix. Having said that,
Winnipeg has a fantastic reputation for hosting international visitors
to our city and our organizing committee looks to exceed every expectation."
The current HeSCA President-elect Ellen Nathan will be installed as the
president during the 2002 meeting. Ellen says that she is looking forward
to the conference, "Known as a global city, Winnipeg will provide the
perfect conference backdrop which brings together diverse professionals
from all areas of the health communications industry."
HeSCA has a strong, nearly half-century history as a professional association
and began as the Council on Medical Television in 1959. With the integration
of technology into health care education and information delivery, HeSCA
continues to meet the needs of professionals working in this evolving
environment. For much of its history the membership has worked in the
field of medical education, but during the 1980's, with the changing structure
of healthcare delivery, employee training and communications became a
part of the career responsibilities. In the 1990's and continuing today,
many HeSCA professionals find their careers shifting towards medical marketing.
The specialties within healthcare communications are many and can focus
by subject or technology; all are addressed by the professional development
opportunities found during the conference.
