culinary milestones

First Hamburger Sandwich was cooked at Louis' Lunch in New Haven in 1900. Louis' descendants are still cooking them the same way today, on the original grill—garnished with tomato and onion only. Don't even think of asking for ketchup!

Birthplace of pizza in America. In 1900 Frank Pepe brought his family's recipe for tomato pie with him when he emigrated from Italy. From this basic recipe, he developed the pizza we all know and love today. Visitors to Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napolitano on Wooster Street can still enjoy pizza baked in the original brick ovens.

First Lollipop. George C. Smith of Bradley-Smith Candy Company, New Haven, decided in 1892 to put sticks into balls of candy he was making.

First Artificial Ice. In 1849, Alexander Catlin Twining, a New Haven engineer invented the first practical method of producing ice in considerable quantities by artificial means.

First Corkscrew. New Havener Philios P. Blake was granted a patent in 1860 for his corkscrew. It was a good idea, but the extensive use of hardwood stoppers was a severe handicap until cork came into greater use, whereupon the corkscrew became a universal gadget.

Feedback from past participants tells us that NETWORKING is one of the most valuable parts of the meeting. This is a friendly, welcoming group. In fact, interacting with colleagues from all over the world keeps many of our members returning year after year.

Join in the special events to fully appreciate how valuable it is to be part of the HeSCA network.

Sail the Long Island Sound (optional networking event)

Schooner sailing on the Long Island Sound off New HavenTake a sail on the Long Island Sound aboard Quinnipiack, a traditionally rigged, wooden schooner. Kick back and enjoy the scenery while you learn sailing, seamanship, marine biology, water chemistry, local history and a variety of other subjects with our professional guide. The event includes dinner in a local restaurant after the sail.

In the early 1970’s a group of sailors concerned about the health of Long Island Sound began a grassroots effort to create awareness through education and advocacy for this treasured body of water. In 1975 they incorporated Schooner, Inc. purchased a schooner, Tradewinds, and began teaching marine science and environmental awareness. To meet the growing educational programs a 91 foot gaff rigged schooner was purchased in 1990 and re-named the Quinnipiack in honor of one of the Native American Indian tribes who once lived in the New Haven area.

Join your colleagues on the Quinnipiak and for dinner, but beware: Limited enrollment – register early.

What to wear: Evenings can be cool in June and the Quinnipiak sails in most weather. Please dress casually.
